Me? A Blogger?
Had you asked me at most any point in my life if I’d be a blogger, the answer would have been a resounding “NO!” However, in an effort to continue building Open Doors Consulting LLC (ODC), here we are. So thanks for reading… and thanks to Hannah and Colby for the pushes in this direction. Let’s see where it goes…
While ultimately yes, I would like to make money with ODC (I did, after all, grow up in a family of entrepreneurs), money isn’t my sole focus. Throughout my life, I’ve been lucky enough to feel firsthand the powerful impact of what it means to belong. From my high school days as wheelchair track athlete at Regina High School (Go Regals) to the campus of Northern Iowa, across the plains of North Dakota, Oklahoma and now Illinois. Friends and strangers alike have offered open doors, a sense of welcome and a place where my authentic self could shine. Places where pressure and expectation lifted and arms and smiles spread.
My life has changed because I’ve been welcomed and felt like I belonged. My goal with ODC is to be a catalyst for schools, groups and organizations as they work to create a powerful culture of belonging within their structure. There is no more powerful feeling than to be accepted and belong in a place.
Open Doors Consulting has existed for 16 months as of November 1, 2022. Thanks to everyone who has encouraged and supported me since this adventure began, and thanks to those who unknowingly have shown me the power and value of belonging. As of yet, I haven’t had the success I’ve wanted. However, what that tells me is that the work of building belonging-centered communities remains as important as ever.
If you think your group could benefit from creating a deeper sense of belonging, check us out at www.opendoors.consulting and let’s have a conversation.
