First ODC Workshop

Recently, I completed my first official ODC Consulting Workshop. After a year and a half of Open Doors Consulting and providing conversations in spaces where I’ve worked, I had the opportunity to present where I didn’t know my audience in advance, didn’t have to call in a favor to get in the door, and I got paid. I was thrilled, I was nervous, but it was fun. Shout out to Greg Troemel and town staff here in Normal, Illinois for the opportunity. The three hours flew by and we had great conversations on a variety of topics.

We talked about belonging versus inclusion on a macro level, about why creating belonging as a community is important, and about practical ways to intentionally move our work from simply being inclusive to focusing on what it means to create belong centered communities.

Community level conversations about belonging are critical to creating a sense of belonging for all people. Whether we are talking about ability and access, new immigrants, young adults, new families, those of racial or ethnic differences, or anything else. To belong is the most powerful feeling in the world and if we can create that in our communities we can all become the best versions of ourselves. I applaud Normal Town staff for their thoughtful, honest, and open dialogue about moving our community forward. Their willingness to unpack these sometimes complex issues, set aside their own privilege, and wrestle with difficult topics speaks volumes about the effort and commitment of everyone in that room.

Thanks to everyone who showed up that day. Our community is better because of your work.

If you think your group could benefit from creating a deeper sense of belonging, check us out at www.opendoors.consulting and let’s have a conversation.
